Poem #11: Hoops, Wednesday Night Version

Hoops, Wednesday Night Version
after Lawson Inada’s “Listening Images”

GENERAL TSAI

If Napoleon had your jumpshot
we would all be French

ALPHA MEYER

Flashbulbs pop whenever
you catch the rock

MAD MAX

A lion’s roar obscures
the strength of silence

STEVEN SIGNIFIER

Your nicknames help us
rise above ourselves

HURRICANE

A grasshopper knows
nothing of limits

FAUXHAWK

The look-away shot
approximates surrender

YOGA SCOTT

Like wine, like cheese,
like a lump of coal

LEFTY LEHNERT

Hessian pugilists subsist
on steak and beer alone

SNELLIE

It’s true, Adonis
couldn’t dunk either

I.Y., MY FRIEND, THE TENTH MAN

A salmon with your instincts
is soon a souffle

Notes

Last basketball poem for a while, I promise. This work is based on Hoops which was based on Listening Images. The characters described here are part of the Wednesday night pickup game I’ve been playing in for about two years; it is one of my favorite parts of the week.
