Poem #10: Hoops (after “Listening Images”)

Hoops
after Lawson Inada’s “Listening Images”

SHAQ

If you don’t feed the dog,
the dog won’t guard the yard

T-MAC

It’s easy to buy your own hype
when you’re making eight figures

AI

Puppy dog punks
ferocious pit bulls

KOBE

People still think Shakespeare
was more than one person

PATRICK EWING

Like Samson without the hair,
but still with the hair

JASON WILLIAMS

Poison often moves
slower than life

ALONZO MOURNING

Chasing championships like
the Wile E. Coyote of the NBA

MJ

Shoot a game of pool with him –
he will stay until he wins

Notes

I wrote this poem in response to Lawson Inada’sListening Images,” a poem made up of couplets relaying Inada’s feelings about major jazz figures. I decided to apply this approach to contemporary (in 2001!) NBA players.
