Poem #8: Three Night Poems

Three Night Poems

I

On the highway, while
you sleep beside me,
I steer us through a stream
of diamonds and rubies

II

To me, it is too
late. To the birds,
it is too early.

III

Try to tie a knot
in the dark – it may
not be possible.

Notes

I enjoy writing short, related poems, especially in groups of three. I regard the short poem – no more than fifty words – as the pinnacle of writing; a perfectly-executed short poem is the most efficient written art we have. Its immediacy is matched only within the world of visual art.

Jack Kerouac and Robert Creeley were both masters of the short poem and frequently enjoyed here at The Poetry Project.
